Concept Explainer Video

Who this is for: Educators, content creators, financial services teams, technology companies, and anyone who needs to explain a complex or abstract idea to a general audience.

Abstract concepts are hard to explain in words. Inflation, machine learning, compound interest, supply chain risk — these are ideas that live in systems and relationships, not things you can point to. The job of a concept explainer is to build a visual metaphor that makes the abstract concrete.

ACT3 AI's AI story expansion system is particularly good at this — describe the concept and ask the AI to build a visual metaphor around it. Use story structure to plan the narrative arc of your explanation.

What you'll do, in order

1. Find the right metaphor before writing anything

The best concept explainers are built on a single, clear visual metaphor. Compound interest is a snowball rolling downhill. The internet is a network of roads. Encryption is a padlock only you have the key to.

Write your metaphor in one sentence before opening the script editor. The whole video flows from it.

2. Structure the explanation as metaphor → reality → application

  • Metaphor — Establish the visual metaphor and let the viewer understand it
  • Reality — Reveal how the metaphor maps to the real concept
  • Application — Show what this means for the viewer specifically

3. Choose a visual style that makes abstract things visible

For invisible systems and relationships: 3D Animated or Cartoon 2D can show things that don't physically exist — money flowing, neurons firing, data moving through networks. For real-world contexts: Cinematic Realism grounds the explanation in recognizable environments.

4. Build sets that represent the abstract world

Create environments that live inside the metaphor — a giant library to represent the internet, a busy marketplace to represent a supply chain, a simple kitchen table to represent a household budget. The set makes the metaphor tangible.

5. Cast a relatable guide character

Concept explainers benefit from a consistent guide character who walks the viewer through the mental model. Create an approachable host who represents the audience — not an expert, but a clear and trustworthy explainer.

6. Build shots that show the relationship between ideas

Concept explanations often need shots that show cause and effect — if X, then Y. Plan shots that demonstrate change, movement, and consequence. Use camera movement to direct attention to what changes.

7. Test for comprehension before publishing

Show the video to someone who doesn't know the concept before publishing. Ask them to explain back what they understood. If they can do it accurately, the explainer works. If they can't, identify where you lost them and revise.
