How to Make an AI Storyboard From a Script

To make an AI storyboard from a script, you run the script through four stages: parse → beat/scene breakdown → shot list → frame generation. A tool reads the screenplay, identifies scene boundaries and action beats, computes a shot list with framing and camera information for each beat, then generates a still image — the first frame — for every shot. The output is a boarded sequence you can read like a comic and hand to a video model as the starting point for each clip.

The short version of the workflow:

  1. Import the script in a format the tool can parse — FDX, PDF, or clean plain text.
  2. Let it break the script into beats and scenes, so the story has structure above the shot level.
  3. Generate the shot list — each shot carrying camera, lens, movement and framing metadata, not just a description.
  4. Generate first frames for each shot from that metadata plus your character and set definitions.
  5. Review and re-roll the frames that are wrong, then move the approved boards forward into video generation.

The difference between a nice AI storyboard and a useful one is whether stages 2 and 3 are automated. Generating pretty images is easy. Generating 650 of them that stay consistent, in story order, with the right characters wearing the right clothes, is the actual problem.


Why previs is the bottleneck for indie filmmakers

Storyboarding is the step most independent filmmakers skip, and then regret skipping. Done by hand it is slow, and done by a hired artist it is expensive. Traditional pre-production — boards, shot lists, lookbooks, location and lighting decisions — runs anywhere from 80 to 200 hours on a modest project.

The trap with generative tools is that they can make previs feel fast while still being slow. Prompting a still image takes thirty seconds. Prompting the three hundredth still image, matching it to the second act, keeping the lead's jacket the same colour and remembering that this scene is at night — that is where the hours go. So the real question is not "can AI draw a storyboard panel." It is: can the tool go from a whole script to a whole boarded shot list without you sitting in the loop for every panel?

Step 1: Get the script into a parseable state

Before automation can help, the script has to be readable by a machine.

  • Use standard screenplay format: scene headings, action, character cues, dialogue.
  • Keep location names identical every time you return to a place.
  • Keep each action paragraph to one visual idea — one paragraph, one shot candidate.
  • Spell character names the same way throughout.

Step 2: Break the story into beats and scenes

A storyboard that goes straight from script text to images loses the story architecture. You want an intermediate layer:

  • Beats — the story units. What changes in this stretch of the film.
  • Scenes — continuous action in one place and time, linked to a set.
  • Shots — the individual generated units, each belonging to a scene.

This hierarchy is what makes revision survivable. When act two changes, you re-board act two, not the whole film. When a set gets redesigned, you re-generate the shots linked to that set. Without the hierarchy, every change is a full rebuild done by hand.

Step 3: Compute a shot list, not just a shot description

A useful shot list carries structured metadata per shot, not prose. At minimum:

Once every shot carries these fields, generating the first frame is a mechanical step. Without them, every panel is a fresh act of prompt-writing.

Step 4: Generate first frames — and keep them consistent

Two consistency problems dominate AI storyboarding:

  • Character drift. The same person renders as a different person shot to shot. The fix is a locked character definition — appearance, age, wardrobe — carried into every prompt, plus per-character model training so the face survives dozens of renders.
  • Set drift. The same room renders differently every time. The fix is defining the location once as a reusable set — a 2D image, a 3D scene, or a procedurally generated environment — and linking scenes to it.

If your tool does not solve both, the boards will look good individually and incoherent in sequence.

Reviewing boards: what to look for

  • Read the sequence, not the panel. Does the eyeline match across the cut? Does the room stay the same room?
  • Check wardrobe against the scene. Continuity errors are cheapest to catch at the board stage.
  • Check coverage. Do you have a wide to establish and a close for the emotional beat, or is the scene all mediums?
  • Check pacing. Long dialogue with no reaction shots will render as long static clips.
  • Re-roll selectively. Regenerate the shots that are wrong; do not rebuild scenes that work.

FAQ

Can AI make a storyboard from a full feature script, not just a scene? Yes, if the tool is built for full-length work.
